About Alpine Log Homes

The proud traditions of Alpine Log Homes date back to the 1930s, when citizens of the United States banded together to pull the country out of the Great Depression. In 1938, upon the completion of the great works by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) and the WPA (Works Progress Administration), a group of skilled craftsmen from those works programs founded Alpine Log Homes; today, Alpine employs the same principles of honest labor, sustainable building practices, and quality workmanship that returned our nation to prosperity.

The crafting process begins by peeling the logs by hand. | | Innovations from Alpine Log Homes
During our early years, Alpine Log Homes handcrafted log buildings on the homeowner’s site, an arduous task of taking logs, men and equipment to the location. In the 1970’s, Alpine Log Homes was the first company to initiate the system for preassembly of an entire log structure at a central location. It was the expert craftsmen at our company who first created a process for the preassembly of an entire log structure at a single crafting facility in Victor, Montana. We then devised the most efficient methods for dismantling and shipping the pre-built homes so that they could be easily reassembled at the owner’s site. Alpine’s model of pre-built log homes revolutionized the entire log home industry, and today that process continues to be used in log building world-wide.

A craftsman hand-scribes a wall log so that it can be notched. | | Among our many innovations, we at Alpine Log Homes are most proud of the work we have done to preserve the environment. Our company pioneered the use of dead-standing logs, thus eliminating the need to harvest live trees. The use of dead-standing timber also reduces the problems associated with green log construction. According to our environmentally-friendly processes, the bark is peeled from the logs by hand, and the logs are then meticulously scribe-fitted, hand-notched, and crafted into place. We construct all walls for our one-of-a-kind homes out of full-length, un-dimensioned timbers with no butting or splicing.

Craftsmen preparing to notch wall logs. | | Alpine Log Homes was also the original developer of the synthetic chinking materials now used throughout the log home industry. Ken Thuerbach, Alpine’s CEO, explains, “In order to move the industry from simple, rustic cabins to rustically elegant homes, we had to find a way to efficiently seal the structure.” After years of trial and error, the answer came in the form of the synthetic chinking material. The chinking adds to the integrity of home but still has the authentic look; it is more energy efficient and mitigates future maintenance.
